Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Roycemore

Friday, 17 Jan 2025

Ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year, Roycemore students have been coming together in the classroom to reflect on the life, legacy, and lasting impact of Dr. King's work and activism. From our youngest students in Pre-K to our seniors in Upper School, each division has engaged in age-appropriate activities designed to honor Dr. King’s vision of equality, justice, and service to others. Here are some of the ways Roycemore students have been exploring Dr. King’s contributions and putting his ideals into action through reflection, creative projects, and community service.

Last week, our youngest learners in Pre-K learned about MLK by reading a book together called "When Martin Luther King Jr. Wore Roller Skates." Afterward, students could draw Dr. King at a different part of his life. Each student chose to hone in on different details of MLK's life that appeared in their reference photos based on what resonated with them the most, with many choosing to draw Dr. King as a baby.

On Friday afternoon, our Lower School students gathered for an assembly celebrating and honoring the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Students learned about the power and significance of the song "We Shall Overcome" by reading the book "We Shall Overcome: The Story of a Song" and got to sing it together as a community. Students enjoyed learning about its message of equality, love, and kindness. Students also participated in grade-level activities and discussions in their classrooms.

In Middle School, our National Junior Honor Society members chose to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy as an activist and changemaker by creating the NJHS Community Service Newsletter. Featuring local service opportunities in and around Evanston for our community to enagage in on Monday in lieu of attending school, the newsletter highlights four community organizations: A Just Harvest, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, Cradles to Crayons, and Girls 4 Girls Ghana. Check out their websites and consider spending MLK Jr. Day in service to others!
