Roycemore School seeks an Early Childhood and Lower School Learning Specialist for the 2025-2026 school year. Founded in 1915, Roycemore is a highly regarded, co-educational independent school for students from 3 years old through 12th grade located in Evanston, Illinois, on the north side of Chicago.

Position Overview


At Roycemore School, we are committed to nurturing each student’s potential through personalized learning and an inclusive, supportive environment. Rooted in our mission, core values, and vision, we seek an experienced Early Childhood and Lower School Learning Specialist to join our dynamic team. This role supports students from Pre-Kindergarten through 4th Grade, fostering students’ academic, social, and emotional growth through differentiated instruction and targeted intervention.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify, monitor, and support students with diverse learning needs through evidence-based interventions.
  • Conduct informal screenings and assessments to evaluate student progress and learning styles.
  • Administer formal benchmark assessments to Kindergarten through 4th-grade students three times a year and share the results with the teaching team.
  • Collaborate with grade-level teachers to optimize learning by implementing differentiated instructional strategies in reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Design and implement student learning plans, providing small-group or one-on-one support through push-in and pull-out models.
  • Partner with faculty, parents, and external specialists to ensure a comprehensive approach to student success.
  • Collaborate with the local school district to facilitate the evaluation process for determining student eligibility for IEPs, 504 plans, and other necessary services, ensuring compliance with district and federal guidelines.
  • Serve as a key member of the Student Success Team, contributing to student learning plans and supporting student transitions to Middle School.
  • Assist the Admissions Team by reviewing incoming student evaluations when requested.
  • Develop and lead occasional faculty and parent workshops on effective learning strategies and interventions.
  • Maintain consistent communication with parents regarding student progress, needs, and strategies through reports, calls, and emails.
  • Provide recommendations for home-based learning interventions.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Reading, Special Education, or a related field (Master’s in Education or Special Education preferred).
  • Demonstrated expertise in early intervention, Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), assessment methods, and literacy and numeracy development.
  • Certification or training in multisensory reading interventions such as SLANT, Fundations, or the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program.
  • Experience with the Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing programs.
  • Strong understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), including Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans.
  • Passion for working with young learners and a commitment to fostering a growth mindset.
  • High level of energy, creativity, and flexibility in instructional approaches.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Enthusiasm for ongoing professional development and a commitment to innovative, student-centered teaching practices.
  • Experience with technology integration in education, including G-Suite/Google Apps for Education, online texts, iPads, and student information systems.
