Dr. Trowbridge has a background in teaching Upper School Chinese and Spanish and before coming to Roycemore in 2018 was also a freshman advisor at Maryknoll School in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. In addition, John has taught courses in Asian, Western, and cross-cultural comparative philosophy, as well as traditional Chinese literature at a variety of colleges including Loyola University Chicago, the City Colleges of Chicago, the University of Hawai‘i – West O‘ahu, Hawai‘i Pacific University, and Kapi‘olani Community College. Prior to joining the Roycemore team, Dr. Trowbridge lived in Taiwan and worked for an international adoption agency supporting families through international adoption. In addition to Mandarin Chinese, Classical Chinese, and Spanish, he has an extensive background in Ancient Greek. In his spare time, he enjoys philosophizing, playing guitar, Kenpo Karate, science fiction, and spending time with his four children.

Dr. Trowbridge says: “Roycemore, as a small, private school that prides itself on a personal touch in education where students are known and not just numbers, reminds me a great deal of the school I attended from grades 5-12 and I am eager to give back some of what I received in that context of teaching and learning. I hope to inspire a life-long love of learning and a deep sense of empathetic imagination in my students.”

Dr. Trowbridge will be teaching a Mandarin I course offered during the 2022-2023 academic year by Roycemore in partnership with Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development (CTD). Students from both institutions in grades 6-12 who meet the eligibility requirements are able to register for the course.

For Roycemore students, the course includes a classroom component on the Roycemore campus and will run from August 30, 2022 through June 8, 2023. CTD students will complete the course asynchronously.  The CTD session begins on September 1, 2022, with additional enrollments on September 15 and October 1, and the course ends on April 30, 2023.

CTD students may register online beginning in late June or early July.  Roycemore students in grades 9-12 should complete the usual course planning requirements with the Upper School Division Head, Ms. Stefanie Rivera.
