Faculty Friday: Kelly Strain

Meet Kelly Strain, Second Grade Teacher at Roycemore!

Ms. Strain graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in Elementary Education and received endorsements in reading and social science. She has always wanted to be a teacher, growing up in the western suburbs playing school in her basement by writing lesson plans and giving spelling tests to her younger sister and neighborhood friends. They still talk about those days and how everyone knew she would someday be a “real” teacher!

Prior to teaching second grade, Ms. Strain taught kindergarten and pre-kindergarten at Roycemore. She remembers after her first-day substitute teaching a class at Roycemore, she left the school thinking how she would love to be a full-time teacher here and was eager to return. Now, over eight years later, she is still excited to return to school each day!

A fun unit that Ms. Strain teaches in second grade is all about catapults! Students use their mathematic knowledge and design thinking to build their own catapults. Tomorrow, Saturday, February 26th, at Roycemore’s Catapult to the Future Maker Event, students and teachers will be showcasing STEAM activities such as how to build a catapult and hosting a catapult contest. These types of STEAM lessons are ones that will take place in Roycemore’s future Innovation Center! You can read more about the Innovation Center at https://roycemoreschool.org/giving/.
