Faculty Friday: Both Long

Both Long wears many hats as a member of the Roycemore team. He serves as Director of Athletics, Physical Education Teacher, and Spanish Teacher, as well as Director of Camp Griffin, one of Roycemore’s summer programs.

Both joined Roycemore’s Summer Camp Team in 2020, taking on our first summer camp during a pandemic. It was thanks to his leadership and guidance from our Health and Safety Task Force that Roycemore was able to offer in person camp experiences safely with significant mitigation strategies that resulted in ZERO COVID cases all summer of 2020. Both has worked to provide even more exceptional in-person experiences that will include cooking, creative and performative arts, STEAM, and a range of field trips.

Both’s coaching philosophy is to use training sessions as tools to reach players with the hopes of sharing my core beliefs and life values. Coach Long has grown to understand that the meaningful connections made on the field stem from the shared experience of teamwork. Playing on an interdependent team mirrors the work we need to do off the field as we look to positively impact the world by building communities that celebrate a variety of skills and voices. He wants to work in youth programming and be an influential presence in the development of a young child’s adolescent years. Recreation and extracurricular programs are his preferred medium of communication because it is where he believes he can express and share passion to inspire healthy, talented and holistically good human beings.

Both studied at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain and the Universidad Catolica Argentina in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is Fluent in Khmer and Spanish. Both was recognized as a member of the United States Soccer Coaches “30 Under 30” in 2018.  He worked in the Athletic Department and taught Spanish at a school in Chestnut Hill, MA where he designed and led Advanced Spanish courses studying Latin American Social Movements. Students extended their learning through projects they created and through multiple guest speakers that led to a dynamic classroom environment. Previously, Both worked in Southborough, MA where he taught Spanish, served as the Associate Director of Diversity and coached soccer and basketball. Additional experience includes serving as the Assistant Coach and Director of Education for The Technical Institute in Houston, where he designed and taught training curriculum and supervised staff coaches for the Women’s Premier Soccer League. Both also previously served as Director of Operations and Residential Director at Arsenal Soccer Schools, NY, and F.C. Barcelona Escola Soccer Camps, London England.

Both says he teaches and coaches because his own life has been so positively impacted by education and mentorship. “I learned that I should treat everyone with empathy and respect regardless of what they look like, where they come from, who they love, and what they believe. I hope to pass on this gift to future generations in hopes of sharing the powerful beauty of living a life for others. Roycemore is a school that cares deeply about the students’ academic and personal growth. There is an admirable amount of investment in nurturing young leaders to be curious, ambitious, and compassionate. I am so honored to be a part of a community that uses the human heart to teach about what it means to be human in the modern world.”
