Dear Roycemore School Community,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am delighted to announce that Christopher English will be Roycemore’s next Head of School. The Board of Trustees unanimously approved Chris’s appointment based on the unanimous recommendation of the Head of School Search Committee. Chris will begin his tenure on July 1, 2022.
Chris has a broad range of experience as a teacher, an international education program director, and a senior administrator that has prepared him well to lead Roycemore. He has held positions of increasing leadership responsibility over nine years within independent schools, and he most recently served as Head of School for The Independent School, an early childhood through grade 12 day school in Wichita, Kansas.
Prior to leading The Independent School, Chris was Associate Head of School for Curriculum and Pedagogy and Head of Campus for The Barstow School in Kansas City, Missouri, and Assistant Head of School, Teaching and Learning for Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah. Chris holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English and has completed several continuing education programs, including the ISACS/Northwestern University Leadership Academy.
Throughout the search process, Chris demonstrated his thoughtful approach to connecting with people, his focus on inclusion and belonging, and his dedication to joining and advancing Roycemore’s community and culture. Chris also showed his aptitude and commitment to foster and strengthen Roycemore’s programs to prepare students to be responsible citizens, innovative thinkers, and compassionate leaders. Across all constituent groups, the survey feedback was clear and consistent. The overwhelming sentiment was that the community viewed Chris as an experienced educator, a dynamic thinker who shares Roycemore’s values, and an effective leader who will drive the next phase of Roycemore’s future.
Chris’s selection follows a process that included engagement from the entire Roycemore community. Thank you to everyone who participated in the search process by responding to the community survey that informed the content of the search prospectus, meeting with candidates, asking thoughtful questions, and submitting feedback regarding the candidates. Particular gratitude goes to the Head of School Search Committee, which was led by Anthony Chambers and included Roycemore administrators, teachers, alumni, and trustees. Both the Search Committee and Roycemore as a whole benefited from the assistance of search consultants Mike Murphy and John Watson from Educational Directions, and the scheduling and coordination efforts of many Roycemore team members (especially Sara, Janine, Vicky, Morgan, and Angela). Mike and John helped the Search Committee assess a large number of applications, narrow the field to the highest-potential candidates, select eight individuals for confidential semi-finalist interviews, and arrange campus visits and comprehensive two-day interviews for three finalists. In addition to carefully considering all of the community feedback, the Search Committee and Educational Directions conducted extensive reference checks and background reviews of each finalist.
The appointment of Roycemore’s Head of School is one of the most crucial responsibilities of the Board of Trustees, closely followed by the development and implementation of a transition plan. The Board and I are proud of the Roycemore community’s engagement in the search process and very pleased that Chris accepted the appointment. We look forward to welcoming Chris and his wife, Lori–and their twin daughters, Emma and Kate, when they visit from college/graduate school – into the Roycemore community. The Board has appointed a Transition Committee to assist Chris, and a transition plan is being developed that will include opportunities for the community and Chris and Lori to become better-acquainted over the coming months.
A key part of the transition plan will involve celebrating Adrianne Finley Odell’s leadership of Roycemore and facilitating the continuation of the spirit of excellence, caring, and innovation she has inspired. Adrianne’s dedication to advancing Roycemore and its faculty and staff, strengthening the school’s financial position, and refining Roycemore’s mission and the vision for its future have been instrumental in enabling us to attract a strong leader like Chris to sustain the Roycemore tradition. We look forward to continuing to partner with you, Adrianne and Chris to further Roycemore’s mission and vision.
