Upper School (Grades 9-12) College Preparation
College Level Work at Northwestern University
Taking classes for full college credit through a reciprocal arrangement with Northwestern University is one of the most valuable opportunities available to qualified Roycemore Upper School students. They do not pay extra tuition for studying at Northwestern, but they do have to meet high academic standards. To qualify, a student must have completed the Roycemore curriculum within a discipline and have received the recommendation of the department and the Upper School Division Head. In recent years, students have taken courses in history, mathematics, science, foreign languages, political science, economics, philosophy and English at Northwestern University.
In June of 2009, 26 Upper School students had completed 24 quarters of study at Northwestern during their Roycemore careers.
Advanced Placement
The Advanced Placement Program consists of college level courses based on course descriptions designed by the College Board for highly motivated students. AP courses are offered within the secondary school setting. For many, undertaking this challenging work has become the norm and Roycemore students do very well.
At Roycemore, such college level work is offered in Studio Art, Biology, Calculus AB and BC, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, French Language, U.S. Government and Politics, European History, Physics, Spanish Language and U.S. History.
Data from the Council for American Private Education shows that the percentage of students in all private high schools taking AP exams is only 10%, while at Roycemore it is 40%.
The College Board has notified Roycemore of the extraordinary results of students who took Advanced Placement exams in 2007-08. Thirty-one students, representing nearly 52% of those in Grades 10, 11 and 12, took 54 exams. 61% percent of the scores were in the honors range.
During the last five years (2003-04 to 2007-08) 258 AP exams have been taken by Roycemore students. 67% of the scores have been in the honors range. During this period, 69% of all Seniors, 50% of all Juniors and 20% of all Sophomores undertook this college work.
Below are some of the colleges and universities to which Roycemore graduates, classes of 2004 through 2009, were accepted:
